London at War: The Darkest Hour

A family fun tour of London seeing all the sights but also hearing the stories and seeing how London and the country coped during the War years.

Please don’t be put off by the somewhat gloomy title as this is a family fun tour of London seeing all the sights but also hearing the stories and seeing how London and the country coped during the War years.

The bombing raids at the start of 1940 were intended to crush the fight out of Britain, instead it inspired a new spirit in the population, the spirit of the BLITZ. We will drive through London and see the sites and remains of war torn London. See where the first bomb fell, view tunnels that became shelters for the masses, see where the secret underground government tunnels were located. You will hear stories of courage and endeavour. Follow Winston Churchill’s footsteps around London and learn how he became the powerful leader of the country. See where Eisenhower stayed whilst in England and view notable war memorials to men, women, children and animals. Your guide will have authentic ration books and newspapers of the day to look at together with photographs of buildings as they looked after being bombed, compared to how they look today. We even have favourite wartime songs to sing along to (if you wish).

ALL DAY OPTION

Why not turn the tour into an all day adventure for the family.

Picking this option will allow your guide to take you to visit the Cabinet War Rooms and Imperial War Museum. In both places your guide will escort you around explaining the exhibits to you. The Imperial War Museum tells the stories of people’s experiences of war from the First World War to the present day. The impact of modern warfare on people and places can be seen in their large exhibits gallery which houses some of the most important weapons and vehicles of the twentieth century. Visiting the Churchill War Rooms we will discover the original Cabinet War Rooms, the wartime bunker that sheltered Churchill and his government during the Blitz. Experience the secret history that lives on underground. Your guide will tell you stories of those who worked underground as London was being bombed above them. We shall also find out more about the life and legacy of Winston Churchill.
